报告摘要:

Precise control of particle motion is required in many chemical and biomedical applications. A variety of force fields have been demonstrated to implement particle manipulation in microfluidic devices, ranging from the ubiquitous gravity to electric, hydrodynamic, acoustic, optic and magnetic forces. Magnetic particle control is based on magnetophoresis which deflects particles either along (i.e., positive magnetophoresis) or against (i.e., negative magnetophoresis) a magnetic field gradient. Positive magnetophoresis takes place for magnetic particles suspended in nonmagnetic fluids, and has so far been the primary form of magnetic field-driven particle manipulations in microfluidics. In contrast, diamagnetic (or simply speaking, nonmagnetic) particles experience negative magnetophoresis in magnetic fluids (e.g., paramagnetic solution and ferrofluid), and can be non-invasively controlled without being magnetically labeled. However, the applications of negative magnetophoresis in microfluidic devices are still very limited and the fundamental transport phenomena behind it still remain unsystematically explored. In this talk I will present our recent results on both the fundamental and applied studies of diamagnetic particle manipulations, which include particle focusing, enrichment and sorting, in ferrofluid-based microfluidic devices.
