报告摘要:

Separating target particles or cells from a heterogeneous mixture is often critical to many chemical and biomedical applications. Pinched flow fractionation (PFF) is a microfluidic technique that utilizes the laminar flow profile to continuously separate particles by size. It requires particles be tightly focused against one sidewall of a microchannel, such that the centers of particles can locate at size-dependent streamlines. Due to the influence of particle dispersion, PFF typically has a limited particle throughput and separation resolution. Our group has recently demonstrated a significantly enhanced PFF by the use of the inherent wall and/or flow induced lift force in straight rectangular microchannels. Specifically, I will present our recent results on the continuous particle separation via (a) the wall induced electrical lift force in electrokinetic flow (elPFF), (b) the wall/flow induced inertial lift force in hydrodynamic flow (iPFF), and (c) the wall/fluid induced elastio-inertial lift force in viscoelastic flow (eiPFF). All three types of PFF-based particle separations can take place in one identical microchannel, and cover the range of Reynolds number from the order of 1 to the order of 100.
